I am the Bug Whisperer.

You know, I don't really have much to say today. The girls are still gone and I am sitting at work far later than usual because, well, it's nice to use a computer that actually functions.

(I got repair estimates today on the iBook (now retamed "iTard" after its latest meltdown), and it's not pretty. Mac users, listen to me. Listen closely. Get AppleCare. Is it a ripoff? Perhaps, but when your logic board fails, you will cry like a little girl. Pay it. It's like mafia protection. You have to pay up, doesn't matter if the thing the mob is protecting you from is the mob.)

The weekend was spent taking LOTS of cool photos. The most unexpected came when I went with a photographer I occasionally work for to the Zilker Park Botanical Gardens in Austin to assist in two engagement shoots. During the time that she was actually taking photos of the happy couples, I was poking around the place, taking more photos of pretty flowers (the names of which I neither know nor particularly care about).

And that's when I discovered that I am beloved amongst dragonflies. I've taken a lot of nature photos, but these might just be my favorites so far.

Although I dig the vultures, too. How creepy is THAT?

Did you get to see all the pretty colors? My logic board failed a couple of months ago in a very exciting fashion. It was like liquid fireworks, and my laptop was invited! $300 at the pretentious and annoying Apple store at Northpark mall. When they fixed it, they wiped my hard drive "for cosmetic reasons". They said that to me while standing under a sign that said "genius."
THANKS FOR THAT, GENIUSES. Even if the data's backed up, it's still a major pain in the ass.

And! I got it home and my RAM wasn't seated correctly. How do you not check that when you fix someone's computer? Another hour drive to Northpark to talk to geniuses, plus confirmation that they basically wiped the HD because they didn't like my desktop background or whatever.

Sorry for the personal rant. All I'm saying is: Don't go to Northpark mall if you can avoid it. Really as a general rule, in life, ever. Even though there are little ducks and turtles which are cute, and Northpark does have cool trains and the best santa but that's beside the point. It's a swirling vortex of stupid. Microcenter is slightly less annoying. Unless you're trying to buy a power adapter, in which case you're just screwed.

I'm in sort of an emotionally unhealthy relationship with Apple. They treat me like crap and I swear I'm going to leave, but they know damn well I never will.

Thanks for the gorgeous pics of the dragonflies. They are my favorites of the bug world.

Amen to the Apple Care! My first iBook - waaaaaay back in the day of the turquoise clamshell - gave me fits and had all kinds of wacky stuff going wrong with it. Apple was great, and I sent it back several times and they could "never recreate the issue." Ultimately, they replaced it - before I asked them to - and here's the best part. By that time, they'd come out with the smaller white iBooks, so that's what they sent me as a replacement. The cheapest upgrade I ever got! I felt guilty for oh, about 10 seconds!!! Now I've got a powerbook and we drink the applecare kool-aid in our house for sure. Good luck.

I absolutely adore the blue dragonfly/waterlily photo.

Maybe the dragonflies are unafraid to mob you while the bugeater in the family is not around . . .

Dude, YES! with the AppleCare. It covers everything, for 3 years! It totally saved my bacon, more than once.

In fact, with the work mac, we didn't have applecare, but when it had trouble, they let us add applecare over the phone. And then I just took it to the handy Apple store. I think there's a time limit on that trick, though.

Now I'm 3 months past my laptop's Applecare expiration. It's only a matter of time now. ... Hmmm. Perhaps I should do a backup.

AppleCare is a must, I agree

One thing - are you sure your iTard isn't covered under the extended logic board warranty?

So sorry to hear about your iBook. I bought an iMac last year, and I did purchase AppleCare, but every time it makes a weird noise, my heart stops a little bit.

Love the photos of the dragonflies. Did you shoot them with the D70's macro setting? I shoot with that camera, and I've never been able to get nice shots with that setting- I use a set of close up filters that screw on to the front of the lens for my macro photography. You might want to check those out if you like photographing flowers and bugs- they're a lot of fun!

Well, Duh, of course Dragonflies love you. You're the daddy of the bug fairy princess, after all.

Great shots, really, they make me insanely jealous of your budding talent, and rockin' camera.

definitely check if you can get the logic board replaced under the warranty, though you probably already did check. I had to get mine replaced and I didn't have AppleCare but it was one of the iBooks that was covered under the logic board warranty. I sent it in to Apple and got it back in 2 days.

Y'know, vultures may be creepy up close, but they are unassailably elegant when in flight. Those huge wings just coast on the air currents like a toboggan on a hill. And if that sort of appreciation makes me a weirdo, so be it.

Dragonflies rock. They've been performing squadron exercises and munching mosquitoes in the park where I work as a gardener all summer, though I think they're starting to die off now. I hope they laid lots of eggs.

I love the dragonfly on the lilypad/leaf photo. Amazing. I tried to take a picture of a dragonfly that lit on my foot once and it was tricky because I couldn't get the focus right. Those are perfect.

Those color contrasts are just amazing. Beautiful.

I dig you Rob, and I love your blog and keep it in my top ten list, but "Tard" is not cool. So not cool.

Yeah, I know. At the same time, I have little time for gentle language, as anyone who has read me for a while should know by now. Be disappointed, as you probably should be, but don't be surprised.

There is a woman who had a booth at the latest yuppieville art show and she had 5X7's of close up nature shots--not unlike your dragonflies. I didn't get close enough to look at the prices but... well all I'm saying is sell them as art.

Amazing pictures! Dragonflies are the coolest of the bugs.

Beautiful!

I got the applecare with my iBook and am waiting for the inevitable day (within three years I hope) when it goes kablooey. WIth my desktop, I can usually fix anything that goes wrong, but laptops are a whole other deal and I use mine every day.
